The question today is: Is Sugar Toxic? Is sugar responsible for obesity? So many questions to answer, but we will set the score straight today. So specialists say that sugar has been the cause of obesity levels rising over the past few decades. Sugar is addictive and extra kilojoules of energy that enter our body are converted into fat.

Fat is stored up and we just keep on getting fatter if we don’t use it. Some experts are more concerned with refined starch more than sugar. We eat lots more starch than sugar and increased starch intake increases blood glucose levels. Sugars occur naturally in many foods that we eat. Foods such as milk, fruit, grains and vegetables contain loads of sugar. Processed foods also have lot too.

To answer the questions: “Is Sugar Toxic?” and “Is sugar responsible for obesity?”, the simple answer is: “Yes”.

Consumers should always read the label and look at the ingredients in processed foods to see exactly what they are eating. Eating too many refined carbohydrates including sugar results in high blood glucose levels. This leads to glycation which is a process that causes prematuring ageing. Wrinkles, sagging and dullness of the skin is the end result of glycation and we all know that we don’t want that to happen.

Many researchers have said that sugar is very addictive. Some can’t go a day without eating some sweets or drinking a soft drink. Our diets these days have evolved a lot. Fast food is very popular and due to the economy slump, people are heading down that fast food route.

Fast foods contain loads of sugars and fats. The worse thing is that people are working harder and not doing enough exercise. It is a vicious cycle and we really need to educate ourselves on the foods that we should and should not be eating.

Think before popping a cupcake in your mouth the next time you have one. Replace it with an apple or orange and you will be doing your body a wealth of goodness.
